AotKR — Base Setup

Here is an Xvid avi of the street area in the little scene ~aotkr-quick-spin.avi~.  GI lit to make for an easy ‘just hit render’ experience.

aotkr-100-self-illum-diffuse-only.jpg

This is a screen grab from the two extremes and the main camera position from the viewports.  The maps are diffuse only and applied at 100% self illumination.  It does look more interesting with shadows, but I’ll have to  get an in engine shot for that.

A fair few more props to do, but it’s in a solid base position now.

AotKR – Rendered Version (no props)

Kind of fun to see it this way.

Motion — First pass the pose

Yikes.

first-pass-the-pose.jpg

I can see where a higher poly base mesh would have been handy — or at least pegging a bit more detail at the elbows :) . The joints were frightening in general, and illegible at the lower sub-divisions. Interesting aspect to have in an early sculpting phase instead of at rigging.

Char right arm doesn’t form the right triangle in negative space, have to correct that while I try to get the right sweep across the torso.

Motion — Base Mesh and First Step

Taking part in this study.  Magdalena is an amazing sculptress and it’s great to see her lead this kind of thing, hope to learn a fair bit here.

base-mesh.jpg

Base Mesh.  Pretty low, but it seems to be where I feel comfortable.

opening-sketch.jpg

Opening sketch of a figure.  Did that tonight, with an hour or so yesterday… so while still crap, at least the crap is done faster.

not-worky-pose.jpg

After importing the first thing I did with the base mesh was to strike a pose in another layer like  Bernini’s David.  It doesn’t really work well, but it let me take a look at the pose, and decide to go with Canova’s Orpheus instead.

AotKR — Base Building Textures

Down.

clipboard01.jpg

Not thrilled with them, but down and tons learned from.  The raw painting, the technical stuff, on and on — very interesting process.

Tons of unseen polys to trim from the camera pov, but the buildings can be taken from the master for use on any angle… should I be able to reuse them…

Couple different things on the go.  Not happy with my focus the last 2-3 days, but much better then it used to be.  We’ll see how it goes.

AotKR — Late Nov Update

aotkr-update.jpg

Got two main buildings build and textured this week.  Not sure when I last updated, but want to get this up so that I can review it myself later.  Who needs categories when you title you’re posts in a search friendly way!

Next step on this is background buildings and then props.  Gonna need to lie down some cars, delivery trucks, etc, but that should be fun.  15k right now… 100% unpopulated.  That is actually find though, I’m using some medium poly buildings in the middle that can be parred down.

Sketch – Quick One

This was a fun one, not super happy, but for almost no time invested it is better then the last few.  The proportional problems bug me, but onto other stuff.

Amazing how many great instructional DVDs there are now, lucky time to be alive and all that.

Finally nailing down my street texture. Big relief there… a lot of brushwork to go, but the base is down, and it feels like the ball is starting to roll well. Screenshots by the end of the week I expect.

Sketch — Quick Little Colour Study

Another colour study.  Yellow light on the left, white on the right, lots of interesting highlights, tons going on with the skin etc.  I can pretty much see most of these things now, but I can’t record them at all (thank goodness for 3d’s lighting I guess).

Light is pretty interesting.  Learning a few of the basics helps see forms a little better as well — there are a few optical effects that can effect what you see, particularly when couple with the brains tendency to see symbols instead of reality.

And now back to super small sidewalk textures.

Sketch – Today’s Warmup

Lots of UVing to do today, warmed up with this. It’s bleh, but not super depressing, so a step up from yesterday.

Sketch — and arguably a painting too

Last bit of colourful naked women fun for a bit. Gotta get back to some mechanical drawing and finish up the last of these street props. This one was an education though, never came close to lighting like that before, wild stuff. Fantastic experience for learning how light should scatter in the skin. Not that I captured it, but I learned a bit about it.

And yes I did get bored before I finished the hands.  Maybe I’ll come back to them in a day or three.
