work in progress

Books of early ‘06

Here are the highlights of what I’ve been reading lately. Theres rather a lot more I’ve gone through… but these are the bits I’d actually recommend:
Science of Discworld 3 : Terry Pratchett Very engaging series, the science is almost more interesting then the comedy at this point.

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel : Susan Clarke Absolutely incredible, especially for a debut novel.

Anansi Boys : Neil Gaiman Nuf said.

Everything I ran into by : Charles De Lint Urban fantasy, really remarkable. Especially the short story collections, those are excellent.
Thursday Next series and the Jack Spratt Series : Jasper Fford Best author that I’ve had pointed out to me in a very long time. The prize is that he’s hitting on a bunch of different cylinders, it’s funny, satirical, great action, a working mystery, and very approachable insanity — pretty much perfect.

More sketching

Few studies from Leonardo and some from imagination stuff.  Quite fun, and I am learning a bit.  Seeing the old master’s point of emphasis is a huge help.  Being forced to look at the way some parts actually look is great too.  Like a wide open mouth, in profile, from slightly above is a real education in a new angle for me.  Really need to put in a firm hour a day on these and I’ll see more results… just tough finding an hour right now ^^

oldOrigin — Finally finished

Got a ton of fantastic crits on this. Stahlberg’s paintover was invaluable. Adam and Dave’s input was sharp, timely and steadying. Getting Rebecca’s clear eye, especially on those last details, was absolutely critical.

I believe the traditional disclaimer to follow that is: Any remaining errors are solely the fault of the author. :)

Finishing this.

Ratatouille

Ratatouille Pretty darn sharp.

Odd how, in the enter of the rat, the eyelids made it look like the eyes were red.  Probably an effect of the res I chose, but it was a bit of a suprise.  Explosive character work there, some particularly good poses if you pause and scroll through the action segment.  Really pushing the SSS, right on the edge of what you’d want there when he crested the edge of the table.

I’m starting to get somewhere, the three central gestures seem to be capturing the moment, but very distorted. Almost done with the angel adjustments, I am putting some attention to it this weekend and Mon. Bloody hot here atm :(

Strawberries

Lovely out today, took a few photos :)

Another lighting challenge

Glass this time, a lot of great entries here. I’ve not had time to do much with it, but I’ve dropped a quick bright bottle version here, and I’ve found a couple of old jars in the basement that are covered in dust (and hopefully not assorted molds >.<) and I’d like to try to mimic that effect on the geometry here.

Some gestures and sketchs

I haven’t been drawing much for the last few… years (yikes), other then basic note taking images for myself I have pretty much been wrapped up in 3D.  Recently I realized that there are a lot of things that I can do that I thought I never be any more then middling at (and middling if I put an enormous amount of effort into it).  So I am starting to learn to draw.
A lot of my early optimisim is coming from the amazing books I’ve run into.  Loomis’s series, Jack Hamm’s and Vilppu are all things I can grasp pretty well.  The other thing they’re all stressing heavily is the underlying three dimensional forms that you’re trying to capture.  In every drawing class that I have taken this hasn’t been a point of emphasis, it jumped from gesture into contour or colour without a slow ramp up dealing with perspective and disecting objects into their basic shape origin.  Not shocking I guess, because every drawing class I had was basically from the same school of thought (OCA trained HS teacher, and then on down the line).

Anyway, it starts now I guess :)   These are quite awful, but I am starting to see mistakes fairly quickly and learn and move on from them.
